Genre: Contemporary Romance
About Just One Love:
My entire life is a lie.
He launched my salty reputation.
Yet, here I am, doing him another favor so he can get what he wants—maybe then I can dislodge him from my heart.
There is an emptiness in my life.
Yet I have everything I need, or at least, I thought I did.
It was supposed to be a simple deal between friends. Friends? Yeah, right. I should have known we’re too volatile for that.
EXCERPT:
Tyler
“I can’t believe you lived above a guy who clearly had no respect for you.”
“I can’t believe he hit you back.”
I chuckle. “I can’t believe that last part either or the fact that he left us alone while we finished moving your stuff.”
“I think it helped that I only had the box spring and bed frame left.” Abby slaps the Ziploc full of ice into my hand. “Keep this on your eye. It’s still swelling.”
I do as she says, trying my best not to wince at the cold bag.
“You know, the whole thing could have been avoided if you had just called me in the first place.” I pin her with a “you know I’m right” look.
Abby groans. “I was doing just fine.”
“That’s not the point.” I lean back into her couch. “I never thought you couldn’t handle it. I just wanted to help.”
Her tongue slips out to wet her lips as she tucks loose hair behind her ear.
Truth be told, when I stepped through that door and saw her, when I said Jesus, I wasn’t referring to the mattress. For a split moment, the Abby I grew up with was standing right there in front of me, her blue eyes sparkling against her complexion, framed by her dark hair. She looked so … her. It was also that moment I realized that talking hasn’t been our strength, and I hardly know the woman she’s become.
I clear my throat. “Why did you change your hair?”
Her hand immediately reaches to her short locks. “Oh, it was time for something new. Plus, I want to look the part for you and your chances for this promotion.”
“You didn’t have to change anything,” I tell her. Shit. I hope I didn’t give her that impression. She’s perfect just the way she is.
“I did, and I need to change more than just my hair, but the rest will take time.”
“Can I ask you something?” Hopefully, she doesn’t say no and find an excuse to leave. Then again, we’re sitting on her couch in her new apartment, so she wouldn’t get very far.
“If it’s about why I’m living here or why I was living there, no. Anything else, yes.” She tilts her head just enough to look me in the eye.
I lower the ice pack.
“Why don’t we hang out anymore?”
She grunts. “What do you call what we’re doing now?”
“Abs,” I say and scoot closer to her. “You know what I mean.”
“I …” she starts, crossing her arms and leaning back. “We grew apart. Simple as that.”
“Yeah, but—”
“Tyler, why does it matter?” She moves to the kitchen table and starts unloading the mail she stuffed into her purse before we left. “We’re talking again now.”
“Because it does.” I move to stand next to her. I want her to look at me. I want her to see that I truly do care. “You were my best friend and somehow, one day, I saw you only when things went wrong.”
“We got drunk and almost had sex, Tyler,” she snaps. “Don’t act like you don’t know what changed us.”
