About Promise Me Forever:
He Knows How Lucky He Is...That Doesn't Mean He's Happy
I get it - A lot of folks would kill to be in my shoes. I make my living playing guitar. That beach anthem you’ve had on repeat all summer – the one with the pickup trucks and drinking beer by the bonfire… I’m the guy playing that killer guitar riff on it.
The problem is, I hate my job.
I’d rather be playing classical music. I want my legacy to be more than the answer to some question in a game of music trivia. In a guitar-town like Nashville, though, gigs playing my kind of music are few and far between.
My brother-in-law lines up an audition for me with a classical musician looking for someone to play on tour, and I jump at the chance. When I meet the brooding star for the first time, though, I know I’ve signed on for a lot more than I bargained for. She may be young, but she’s endured pain enough for a lifetime, and more. Peeking through that broken armor of hers is more beauty than I thought was possible in one person.
I’ve never been the type of guy to settle down with one woman. She’s making me rethink that, and just about everything else I thought I knew.
She’s looking for forever. I just hope that’s a promise I can keep.
EXCERPT:
Fucking American. Okay, maybe that was hypocritical. I was born there, after all, and spent two-thirds of my life there. Still, I’m not American. Despite my North American accent and London address, I’m a Scottish lass through and through.
As soon as Rome Graham called Edward’s office, I did my research. I looked up all his ASCAP information – the files that told me what records he had played on. I scoured the web for mentions of him. I found a few photos of him at industry events, each with some gorgeous country music ingénue draped on his arm. I wasn’t surprised that he’d be full of himself. And why wouldn’t he be? Tall, fit, with dark blonde hair, blue eyes, and one of those perfect, brilliant white smiles. Whatever.
Rome Graham and his extra-curricular activities were the least of my worries. What was important to me is what I heard when I listened to some of the tracks I’d found. I ran them through my Audition software and isolated the acoustic guitar.
Rome was nearly perfect.
Every note played as if the rest of the song was written around him, instead of him playing what was written as backup for the vocalist. I found other performances, too. The one that made me call Edward and have him book the video audition was a performance at the party of some industry executive.
The piece was Antonia – Bulería por Soleá. It was flawless. His performance almost moved me to tears. I picked up the phone and called Edward and told him I wanted to see him as soon as possible.
When he came strolling into my studio, all cocky and full of bravado, I immediately started to doubt my decision.
Then he sat down to play.
He played magnificently. As he played, I thought, he’s even better than Ollie. I winced at the memory. Ollie. Fuck. I still miss him every day. I miss them all.
Even though Rome played with amazing precision and interpreted the piece beautifully, he wasn’t working up to his potential. He was present – focused, but he wasn’t giving me everything, and I wanted it all. He was the kind of musician who could phone it in and make every other player in the room weep with envy. His halfway was so much better than anyone else’s one hundred percent that he’d probably never been challenged before. He didn’t like it. At least not until he saw what that challenge produced.
He could feel it. I could feel it to. He dug deep, and he took the piece to a higher level. It was transportive. It was worth fighting with him to get that out of him. I wasn’t sure I could deal with that for the entire tour. He was challenging, but his talent might make that challenge worth the while.
