Author: R.G. Corr

Genre: Romantic Suspense

About FINDING MY FIGHT:

A perfect marriage? A beautiful home? Things are not always as they seem.

To everyone they knew, Ginny’s life with Blake Daniels was perfect. When Blake’s job takes them away from home and the friends Ginny has known since childhood, things start to change. On their own, in an isolated house, the man who held Ginny up through her mother’s passing is no longer the kind, supportive man she thought she’d married. In his place now resides a cruel beast whose only desire is to control her. Ginny’s life as she knows it, becomes indelibly marked with every bruise he leaves on her, and every callous word he sends her way.

When the unthinkable happens, Ginny is forced to find the strength she needs to leave and rebuild her life without Blake. Yet nothing could have prepared her for what was still to come. Ginny believed the nightmare was over, but it was only just beginning. Her husband is back, and there’s only one reason he’s here.

EXCERPT:

I walk with purpose, knowing exactly where I’m heading this time. The familiar bench comes into view across the road, and I’m saddened to see it’s empty. I imagine if someone were to re-varnish the wood, giving it a brand new appearance, people would soon sit down. Sometimes there is a beauty to imperfections, but often there is a sadness to the reason behind them.

The wind whips around my neck, so I tug up my collar and pull down my woolly hat. Scarves and long hair are no longer a barrier to weather, but I’d rather go cold than be dressed in a weapon. I come to the side street where my journey ends and remind myself of why it is that I’m here.

They say there’s a cycle to abuse. That women like me move through each stage at the hands of their abuser. The tension builds before leading to violence. Then, for a while, you may get a reprieve before it starts all over again. Some manage to alter the path and run but never quite live freely. Others break free, but that’s the last thing they ever manage to achieve. A number leave, return, then leave again, finding it impossible to break the cycle.

I have to break the cycle.

Living with the fear and pain that is part of my everyday life can no longer be classified as living. I could end it all. It could go away indefinitely. I think of the medication we keep in the kitchen cupboard or the sharp knives in the drawer. Everything could be over, but that would leave people I care about to face guilt that rightfully should not be theirs.

There is only one answer. I need to learn how to survive.

Stopping, I face the blue door. The wind is unable to reach me now, but I still hold my coat tight around me, feeling cold and nervous at the same time. I lift my hand, wrapping it around the faded gold metal of the handle, its tarnished appearance somehow providing me with reassurance that damage does not mean the end. With a twist of my wrist, the door opens.

I take a deep breath and step inside. The lady at the desk has her attention on the computer in front of her. It only takes a second before she looks up and smiles. Then she slowly stands from her desk. I guess they’ve all been advised never to make any sudden movements. My eyes sink to the floor below because unlike last time, I now know I belong here.

For her.
