“Let’s talk about tonight.”

“Tonight?” He sure didn’t waste any time. “You didn’t mention we’d be practicing so soon,” Lily hedged.

“The sooner we get started, the better. I plan on winning, don’t you?” Gabe fixed her with a direct gaze and waited for her response.
“Yes,” she said slowly, “but how are we going to find a dance instructor to choreograph it on such short notice?”

He drew back and made a noise that was a mixture of scoff and disbelief. “We don’t need a dance instructor. I’ll teach you the moves you need to know.”

Really. She’d never met anyone so cocky. “What makes you think I need to be taught?” she challenged. “Not to brag, but I’m a good dancer.”

“And I’m the king of dance.” One corner of his mouth lifted, and his dimple appeared, taunting her.

His tone was playful, but he probably meant it, Lily thought with a roll of her eyes. “Why so humble?”

Gabe winked. “You’ll see. But tonight, we put your moves to the test.”

“Mine? No,” she said with a shake of her head. “Your moves will be put to the test, not mine. I don’t have to prove myself. You recruited me,”
she reminded him with a lift of her brows. “I need to see your moves before I agree to them. I don’t want to regret I agreed to partner with you.”

His lips twitched. “Ouch, you’re great for a guy’s ego, aren’t you?” His grin deepened. “Fair enough. I like challenges, and you,” he said, tipping her chin to meet his eyes, “are the best one I’ve ever encountered.”

He was baiting her. Lily remained silent as he watched her with amusement dancing in his espresso eyes.

“What kind of dancing did you have in mind?” she said after a weighty pause.

He shrugged. “Some salsa, merengue, mambo and a little cha-cha thrown in.”

“Anything else?” she said dryly.

“Maybe.” He chuckled at her tone. “Think you can handle it?”

She didn’t want to reveal it, but excitement pumped through her veins at the thought of Latin dancing with Gabe. “The King” was sure to be a great dancer—his rolling, loose-hipped walk attested to it. She suddenly couldn’t wait to get started, but he didn’t need a bigger ego, so she lifted her nose with a detached air.

“Well?” he prodded when she didn’t answer right away.

“I can more than handle it. No big deal.”

“Have you ever Latin danced?” he challenged, giving her a narrowed-eye look.

She sniffed. “Of course.”

A slow grin spread over his face. “You’re full of surprises,” he murmured. “I rented a studio on 3rd Avenue. We’ll practice three times a week for the next two weeks, and then every night afterward for the last week. Does that work for you?”

She sucked in a breath and considered how their dynamic would change. She’d been making an effort to keep him at arm’s length, but that wouldn’t work anymore, not with that much contact.

Three times a week was a big commitment, but if they were going to win, they had to practice often. Dancing with Gabe that often would intensify their intimacy, and he might have more in mind than dancing. His dark eyes regarded her expectantly.
Oh, who was she fooling? The prospect of dancing with him and the intimacy it would bring made her heart race and her body thrum with excitement. She’d be a fool to turn it down.

My teeth are chattering by the time I make it to the rear of the building. Running outside without my coat in the middle of February isn’t one of my best ideas, but the truth is, I’m so numb, I can barely feel anything.

Mikah’s sitting on the edge of a massive concrete flower bed. It probably looked happy and colorful during the summer, but right now, the soil is desiccated and covered with a blanket of dirty old snow.

The gloomy, ominous clouds hang low above our heads, threatening yet another blizzard. This winter has been one of the longest I’ve ever seen, one of the darkest too, and I catch myself thinking that I desperately want it to end. Even if it wipes out all the good memories. I just want to stop feeling broken.

Mikah’s turned with his back to me, cigarette smoke floating around him like a halo.

The snow crunches under the weight of my suede shoes as I walk quietly over to the flower bed, my fingers clutched in front of me, my heart rate kicking up. There are thousands of words in my head, yet none of them seem to be appropriate.

“Are you just gonna stand there?” Mikah rasps out after a while without looking at me. He brushes the traces of tears from his cheeks with the back of his hand, tosses the last of his cigarette on the ground, and draws another one from the pack that’s sitting next to him on the cement block.

“Can I have one?” I ask, blurting out the first thing that comes to mind.

“Since when do you smoke?” He chuckles, shifting to face me. His green eyes, still glistening from his tears, search mine.

“Since now.” I shrug, shuffling my feet. My toes are completely frozen and my body has reached a point where moving only makes it more painful, but at least if someone decides to shoot at us, there’s plenty of room to run. There are no walls and no missing exit signs.

Mikah rises and closes the space between us in three strides. “Here.” He takes off his suit jacket, puts it over my shoulders, and gives me his cigarette. His gaze catches mine and we stand motionless for a few moments staring at each other, probably wondering whether the things we’re each feeling right now are any different. When two people are sad over the same person’s death, there’s a strange type of connection, frightening and nerve-racking. It’s like we have this invisible bond and we understand each other without the need to speak.

I’ve never smoked in my life and I have no idea how to hold a cigarette, so I grab it across the middle with my thumb and index finger, wondering which end goes into my mouth. Although I just saw Mikah smoking, my brain has completely lost it.

“The other way,” he says, stepping back to get another for himself.

“Okay,” I mumble under my breath. I stick it between my lips but immediately remove it when the unpleasant taste of tobacco on my tongue causes my stomach to churn. My injured palm stings with the movement, but I try not to think about the pain.

“You dated a dude who was in a fucking rock band and he didn’t teach you how to smoke, Church Girl?” Mikah rolls his eyes and flicks his lighter in front of my face.

LM: Do you see a conflict of interest in my being your best friend and conducting this interview?

RK: As if a conflict of interest has ever slowed you down before. I’ve seen you do way worse.

LM: You’ve been an accomplice to way worse.

RK: Shhhhh. Don’t go spilling my skeletons before I’m famous.

LM: Get ahead of them. Admit them. Go on, tell us what you do for a living. *nudges RK in the ribs*

RK: I’m a pole dancer, just like you, only I keep my knickers on.

LM: My knickers stay on, thank you very much. Everything else, well, that all depends on how big the notes are.

RK: Let’s get this straight right now, before she keeps going. I teach pole aerobics at the gym. Lily’s the stripper. Not me. I will not take off my clothes for money, no matter how desperate I get.

LM: You’ve clearly never been desperate enough.

RK: Let’s keep it that way. Desperation, like the color orange, doesn’t look good on me.

LM: Orange? There are a whole lot of colors that don’t go with that fiery, red hair.

RK: *checks the time on her phone* Can we wrap this up?

LM: Do you have somewhere more pressing to be?

RK: No, not really, but you’re boring me.

LM: Okay, okay … lightning round. What’s your dream role?

RK: Evita.

LM: Who is your girl crush?

RK: You, of course.

LM: Boy crush?

RK: My boyfriend, Mark. Right?

LM: You keep telling yourself that. He’s a douche.

RK: I love it when you have my back like that.

LM: Someday you’ll come crying to me and I’m just going to say, “I told you so.”

RK: Never. Not gonna happen. No need. We’re perfectly happy together.

LM: There you have it folks, a truly shallow interview with our next musical theatre superstar, the ever sweet and quite delusional, Rachel Kennedy.
