About Famous by Default:

Jax doesn't want to be famous. Stalked by rabid fans and the paparazzi, he dreams of better days when things were normal. But those days are gone. No one can stay under the radar if you're from the Jaynes family. He doesn't trust anymore.

Sivan doesn't have a family. As a part of the foster care system, all she wants is to finish doing her time and move out and on. She doesn't love anymore.

Jax and Sivan are thrust together on a small-town farm in Mount Vernon, Iowa. They take an immediate dislike of one another, trying at every opportunity to trip each other up. They don't want to acknowledge they might be more similar than they first thought.

Will they stay stuck in their past, hanging on to their lack of trust and love? Or can they change before it's too late?

EXCERPT:

We passed the barn with the familiar smell of horses. I took a deep breath as we turned toward the east fence. A clear day, so I could see the pastures stretch out for miles.

“His mom is concerned for him. Not just about the social environment. His studies last year didn’t go well. His junior year was a disaster.”

“Drugs?

“Oh, no. The band.”

Not an actor, a musician.

Universe, are you there? Why are you torturing me?

I’d found the perfect place with Betty and the girls. I’d felt safe for the first time in forever. My stomach twisted. Music. Jax would ruin everything.

“The band?” I managed to squeak out.

“Yes. See?” She pointed to her shirt.

What? I took a closer look. “Why is Jax on your shirt?”

“No, it’s his twin brother, Gage.”

“Oh.”

“Charley has four boys, and the three oldest formed a band. Have you heard of The Jaynes?”

I shook my head.

Betty smiled. “I didn’t think so. I remember you don’t like boy bands.”

My cheeks burned. “No offense to your nephews. I’m sure they’re talented.” I’d insulted her family without even knowing it.

She chuckled. “None taken. Anyway, Jax decided he didn’t want any part of it. The type of music he prefers is a little different than his brothers. Indie rock. Are you familiar with that type of music?”

“Yes.” It was the only music I found at least a little tolerable.

We’d reached the halfway point of our walk. The northeast corner had all the prettiest wildflowers. “Can I pick a few for the house?”

“Of course. These flowers won’t last much longer. The chill has already set in.”

After collecting an armful of every conceivable color and size, I asked, “Why was Jax attacked in the airport? Did the fans of the Jayne Brothers mistake him for his brother?”

“We all thought the same thing when this first started. But, as it turns out, he has a following of his own.”

“Why? Has he released any of his own songs?”

“No. The opposite. He’s refused to play since last May. His mom is quite concerned.”

He’s shut out music just like me.

“So, this following of his is because…?”

Betty shrugged. “Your guess is as good as mine. All I know is, Jax doesn’t like it.”

Oh. Now I understood a little about his rant.

Didn’t mean I would ever like him. Nope. Not going to happen. Someone needed to convince him, or Betty, or his parents, that he was better off back where he came from.
